Hazeen Ashby, Esq. is the Legislative Director for Research & Policy and the Executive Editor of the State of Black America (SOBA). In this capacity, Ms. Ashby monitors policy developments related to telecommunications and broadband, immigration and civic engagement; and directs advocacy strategies that advance the Urban League's legislative agenda in these areas. She represents the Urban League on numerous policy coalition groups and in meetings with congressional and agency staff.
Before joining the Urban League, Ms. Ashby was the Senior Policy Counsel for the Culture Program at Third Way, a centrist think tank. At Third Way, she specialized in immigration policy and was featured in the Huffington Post.
Prior to Third Way, Ms. Ashby was the Associate Director of Student Chapters at the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS). In that capacity, she managed the programming and growth of ACS’s nationwide network of law student chapters through the continued development of their existing network and integration of student chapter activities and members into ACS’s substantive initiatives and network of professional members.
No stranger to the Urban League, Ms. Ashby also has served as the Managing Editor for The State of Black America for 2013 and 2014.
Ms. Ashby earned her JD from the Howard University School of Law and her Bachelor’s degree in Social Policy from Northwestern University.
